ACE Scholarships Provides $105,000 Tuition Aid Grant to School Affected by Maui Fires
LAHAINA, HI (April 4, 2024) — ACE Scholarships, a nonprofit dedicated to expanding access to K-12 education opportunities, yesterday presented a $105,000 grant to Sacred Hearts School in Lahaina, Hawaii to offset tuition costs for families displaced by the wildfires.
The wildfires, which ravaged parts of Maui, miraculously spared the historic Maria Lanakila Catholic Church but left Sacred Hearts School in ruins. Despite the destruction, Principal Tonata Lolesio courageously reopened the school just three weeks after the fires, recognizing the importance of stability and continuity for students during a time of chaos and uncertainty.
Many of the 167 students who attend Sacred Hearts School are facing extreme financial hardship following the fires and need tuition assistance desperately.
“Our school serves as both an educational and spiritual anchor for these students,” said Lolesio. “This grant from ACE has allowed many families the financial resources necessary to return to school and reinstate a sense of normalcy and community in their children’s lives.”
ACE Vice President of Scholarships Kirsten Eastwood presented the $105,000 check to middle school lead teacher and history instructor Dr. Patty Wurst yesterday at Sacred Hearts School. The check presentation was followed by a tour of the school’s temporary campus that is serving students while the school’s new site in Kaanapali is under construction.
